Basketball is the deepest player-prop sport on an Ontario board and the one that reprices fastest in play. Every registered sportsbook prices the NBA; what separates them is how far the prop shelf goes and which leagues sit behind it.
The One Sport Where You Can Bet an Ontario Team
This is worth stating plainly, because basketball is the exception in this province.
In hockey, the OHL plays in Ontario and cannot be bet on: the Registrar’s Standards prohibit bets on Canadian minor-league sport, and two operators were fined $15,000 each for offering it. In soccer, League1 Ontario appears on no board in the province, for the same reason.
Basketball is different. The Canadian Elite Basketball League is Canada’s top-tier professional league, not a minor one, and it is carried on Ontario boards as its own competition. Four of its ten clubs play here.

How to Bet on Basketball in Ontario
Four steps, and the third is where basketball differs from other sports.
- Open an account at a registered sportsbook. Registration means the operator appears on the iGaming Ontario list. Verification asks for name, address and date of birth.

Point Spread
The primary basketball market, and the one most money goes into. Because scores run into the hundreds, the spread moves in whole and half points across a wide range, unlike the fixed 1.5 of hockey and baseball.
The half-point matters: a line of -5.5 cannot push, while -6 can. Sportsbooks offer alternative spreads either side of the main number, each at its own price.
Moneyline
Which team wins, no handicap. In a sport with few upsets, favourites are often priced at -200 or shorter, which is why many bettors take the spread instead. There is no draw — overtime decides it.
Over/Under (Totals)
Combined points, usually somewhere between 210 and 240 in the NBA. Totals here move on pace rather than weather: a team that plays fast raises the number for both sides, regardless of how good either is.
Player Props
The largest single group of markets on a basketball board, and the reason the counts run so high. Points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, three-pointers made, turnovers, and the combinations — points plus rebounds plus assists, double-doubles, triple-doubles.
Basketball suits props better than any other sport because the statistics accumulate steadily rather than in rare events. A player who averages 25 points will score in almost every game; a hockey player who averages a goal every other game will not.
Overtime and What It Settles
In the NBA, WNBA and college basketball, overtime counts towards the moneyline, the spread and the full-game total, but not towards quarter or half markets — those are already settled.
That single rule is why a total can go over on points scored in a period nobody expected to be played, and it is the clearest difference between these leagues and the CEBL, where overtime does not exist at all.
Team Props
Team totals, whether a team leads at the half, largest lead, and race-to markets — which side reaches 20 points first. Useful when you have a view on one side’s pace and none on the result.
Quarter and Half Betting
Every basketball game is really four smaller games, and Ontario boards price them that way: a moneyline, spread and total for each quarter and each half. First-quarter markets are the most heavily bet, because starting lineups are known and rotations have not yet scrambled the game.
Game Props
Events rather than results: whether the game goes to overtime, the winning margin bracket, whether either team scores 120, the highest-scoring quarter.
Futures
Championship, conference, division, regular-season win totals and the individual awards — MVP, Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year. Basketball futures stay open longer than most, because the season runs from October to June.
Parlays and Same-Game Parlays
A parlay combines several selections into one bet, and every leg must land. The odds multiply, and so does the risk.
Same-game parlays are more common in basketball than in any other sport, because one game offers so many related markets. That relationship is the point: a player’s points and the game total are not independent events, so the sportsbook prices those legs together rather than simply multiplying them. The result is a shorter price than a naive multiplication would suggest — and the reason two Ontario books can quote noticeably different numbers on the same three legs.
How Deep an NBA Board Goes
Basketball produces the highest market counts of any sport on an Ontario board, and one operator publishes the figure openly.
On PowerPlay, an ordinary NBA game carries more than 200 markets. That is roughly double what a thin board offers on baseball, and it is entirely driven by the prop shelf — points, rebounds, assists and their combinations, for every player in both rotations.
The gap between the two boards is not a quality judgement — it is a calendar one. Both counts were taken in early September, outside the NBA season, when one book was carrying European and South American leagues in volume and the other was not.
That is the point worth carrying away. A basketball count taken in September says almost nothing about the same board in January, which is why every number on this page is dated.
NBA Betting in Ontario
The NBA is the centre of basketball betting here. Eighty-two regular-season games per team from October to April, then two months of playoffs, with the deepest prop menus and the fastest in-play markets of any sport on the board.
The Raptors and the Ontario Card
Toronto is the only NBA franchise outside the United States, and that shows on provincial boards: Raptors games attract more attention, more markets and more money than any other basketball fixture in Ontario.
It also creates a scheduling quirk worth knowing. Raptors home games tip off in the Eastern evening, but the team plays a third of its schedule on the west coast, which puts a meaningful share of its games past midnight local time.
NBA Teams and Games
Which games a sportsbook prices, and how deeply, changes across the season. Early in the year the boards carry every game at full depth; by April, attention and market counts concentrate on the teams still fighting for playoff position.

WNBA
Priced at every Ontario sportsbook through its May-to-October season, with moneyline, spread, totals and a player-prop shelf that has grown substantially in recent years.
The scheduling matters more than the depth: the WNBA runs exactly through the NBA off-season, which is why an Ontario basketball board does not go quiet in July. Totals sit lower than the NBA — the game is shorter, at four ten-minute quarters — so a number that looks low against an NBA line is normal here.
CEBL
Canada’s top-tier league, running May to August, and carried on Ontario boards as its own competition. Market depth is thinner than the NBA — expect the main three markets and limited props — but it is the only basketball where you can bet a team from your own city.
NCAA Basketball
College basketball is available in Ontario through the winter. Expect the main three markets and bracket futures; player props on college games are offered far more sparingly than in the NBA, and on smaller conferences often not at all.
March Madness
The NCAA tournament produces one of the heaviest betting weeks of the Ontario calendar. Sixty-eight teams, single elimination, and more than thirty games in the opening four days.
Two things change during it. Boards that ignore college basketball all season suddenly price every game, and bracket markets appear — outright winner, region winners, and Final Four combinations that exist nowhere else in the year. Lines on small-conference teams move sharply, because the market has far less information on them than on an NBA roster.
International Basketball
This is where the wider boards separate themselves. One Ontario book’s basketball section carried the EuroLeague alongside the Argentine LNB, the ABA League, Turkey’s TBL, the Indonesian IBL, a Bahraini league, Germany’s cup and an A1 women’s competition.

What Moves a Basketball Line
Three things move basketball prices more than anything else, and all three are knowable before tip-off.
Injury and Rest News
Basketball rotations are short. One absent starter can account for a quarter of a team’s scoring, so a line moves further on a single name here than in any other team sport.
The timing matters as much as the news. Lineups are often confirmed under an hour before tip-off, which means a spread you took in the afternoon can look very different by the evening — and every player prop attached to that name is pulled or repriced at once.
Back-to-Backs and the Schedule
A team playing its second game in two nights, especially after travel, is a different team. Sportsbooks price this in, but the size of the adjustment varies between books, which makes it one of the clearest places to compare two Ontario boards on the same game.
Pace
Totals in basketball are a function of how fast both teams play, not how good they are. Two strong defensive teams that both play quickly can carry a higher total than two weak ones that walk the ball up the floor.
How League Rules Change the Bet
Basketball is not one game with four badges on it. The four competitions an Ontario board carries run on different clocks, and two of those differences change what a market can do.

The CEBL Target Score, and Why It Matters
This is the rule that catches out anyone betting the CEBL for the first time, and it has no equivalent in the NBA.
At the first stoppage after the four-minute mark of the fourth quarter, the clock is switched off. A target score is set by adding nine points to the leading team’s total, and the first side to reach it wins. If the score is 77-71, the target is 86, and the game runs until someone gets there.

Basketball is the fastest in-play product in a regulated sportsbook, and that cuts both ways.
A possession ends every twenty-odd seconds, so the moneyline, spread and total reprice almost continuously. Markets suspend on every stoppage — a foul, a timeout, a review — and a suspended market cannot be bet, which is why an in-play basketball board feels like it is constantly flickering.
Live player props survive less well here than in baseball. The statistics accumulate fast, so a points line set before tip-off is stale within minutes, and books either reprice aggressively or pull the market.

Reading the Price
American odds answer two different questions depending on the sign. A minus number is what you must risk to win $100; a plus number is what $100 returns in profit.

Finding the Margin
To compare two Ontario boards on the same game, convert both sides to implied probability and add them up.
A spread priced -110 on both sides gives 52.4% + 52.4% = 104.8%. Those 4.8 points above 100 are the sportsbook’s margin, and they are what the bet costs you before anything else. A book quoting -105 on both sides charges roughly half as much for the same market.
