MLB: ~400 markets a game
$20 (all methods)

NorthStar Bets is a Canadian-built sportsbook and casino, registered with the AGCO under OPIG1226485 and operated by NorthStar Gaming (Ontario) Inc. Its Kambi betting board carries around 400 markets on an ordinary MLB game – roughly double what we counted at TonyBet – and it is the only Ontario book in our set with a toll-free phone line answered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The cashier is where it gives ground: $20 minimums on both deposits and withdrawals, no firm payout window, and a dormancy clause that can eventually forfeit an untouched balance.

How We Checked NorthStar Bets

This review is built on primary sources only. We opened NorthStar Bets from a Canadian connection and read the operator’s own pages: the sportsbook board, the casino and live dealer lobbies, the full help centre, the sports betting rules and the terms of use.

  • We took the AGCO registration number from the footer of the site itself, and cross-checked the operator against the iGaming Ontario framework, at the time of this review.
  • We counted the markets on the board ourselves, game by game, at the time of this review.
  • Every deposit floor, withdrawal rule, fee statement and support channel comes from NorthStar’s published help centre and terms, which are public and need no account.
  • App versions, release dates, sizes and ratings come from Apple’s public app lookup and from Google Play.
  • We read the sports betting rules in full, including the payout ceiling and the settlement clauses most bettors never open.

Is NorthStar Bets Legal in Ontario?

Yes. NorthStar Bets is operated by NorthStar Gaming (Ontario) Inc. under AGCO registration OPIG1226485, with an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario.

The registration number sits in the footer of every page, next to the iGaming Ontario seal, the BetGuard mark, an RG Check accreditation from the Responsible Gambling Council and an IBIA B2C member badge for sports betting integrity.

The registration number is published on every page, alongside four separate accreditation marks.

The terms are blunt about who may play. You must be at least 19 years old, you may hold only one account, and you agree to “only play Games while physically in Ontario using a device that is physically in Ontario”. That last part is enforced by GeoComply – a browser plugin on desktop, or your phone’s own location services on mobile. A VPN or proxy will fail the check outright.

What makes NorthStar different from most of the Ontario field is where it comes from. This is a Canadian operator, not an international brand that opened an Ontario branch: the parent company is listed in Canada and the product was built for this province first.

One thing we will flag now rather than bury. The self-exclusion clause in the terms, section 2.16, still contains an unfilled template placeholder – it refers to “(Operator)’s terms and conditions” instead of naming NorthStar. It changes nothing legally, but a document that governs your money should have been proofread.

NorthStar Bets Sports Betting

The sportsbook runs on Kambi, the Swedish supplier behind several of the more serious books in this market. You can see it in the page code, and you can see it in the product: this is a full-depth board, not a shortlist of headline lines.

NorthStar Bets Ontario sportsbook lobby showing the sports rail with market counts and the MLB board with moneyline, run line and total runs
The sportsbook at the time of this review. The number beside each sport in the left rail is how many betting options it is carrying.

Which Sports You Can Bet On

The left rail carries a live counter beside every sport. Here is what it showed at the time of this review:

Sport Betting options
Soccer 102,111
Baseball 5,196
Football 3,790
Tennis 3,697
Esports 3,235
Basketball 1,275
Hockey 700
Golf 368
UFC / MMA 289
Cricket 191
Boxing 78
TV & Novelty 11
Formula 1 3

Above the sports list sits a Popular shelf that follows the calendar rather than a fixed order. That afternoon it led with MLB (5,076 options), La Liga (6,596), WNBA (663), ATP (308), WTA (212) and NFL Preseason (48), with 82 events running live at that moment.

Two observations. Soccer is carrying more than one hundred thousand betting options on its own, which tells you the board is fed globally rather than trimmed for a Canadian audience. And Formula 1 sitting on three options is the honest counterweight – motorsport is an afterthought here.

How Many Markets a Game Actually Carries

This is where NorthStar separates itself from the mid-table of Ontario books, so we counted rather than trusted the marketing.

Every pre-match card shows three prices side by side – Moneyline, Run Line and Total Runs for baseball – and then a button telling you how many more markets sit behind it. On the MLB board that afternoon:

NorthStar Bets MLB betting grid showing between 393 and 427 additional markets on each pre-match game
Read the right-hand column: 427, 420, 416, 424, 393 more bets on ordinary regular-season games.
  • Cubs at Diamondbacks – 427 more bets
  • Milwaukee at the Mets – 426 more bets
  • Red Sox at Marlins – 424 more bets
  • Astros at Yankees – 418 more bets
  • Rockies at Nationals – 393 more bets

Across ten pre-match games the range was 393 to 427 additional markets. For context, that is roughly double what we counted on a comparable board at TonyBet, and it is on ordinary regular-season baseball rather than a showpiece fixture.

Games already under way drop sharply – to 15 or 18 markets – which is normal: once the first pitch is thrown, most props are settled or suspended.

Baseball bettors also get a filter row most books skip: Listed Pitcher – Away, Home, or Both, which decides whether your bet stands if a starter is scratched. That is a real setting, not a cosmetic one.

Live Betting, Cash Out and Same Game Parlays

The in-play board sits behind a Live Right Now entry at the top of the rail, with a running event count.

Cash out is available on selected events, in both pre-match and live, and on singles as well as multiples. The rules are unusually specific about the limits of it: a cash-out request can be delayed for acceptance like any other bet, and if the price moves during that delay the request is refused with an on-screen message rather than silently repriced.

Same game parlays exist, and the rules explain the boundary. NorthStar prohibits accumulators that combine two or more related outcomes, unless they are placed through its own in-event parlay tool. Build a correlated multiple by hand and the correlated legs can be voided; build it inside the bet builder and it stands. Most books bury this. This one states it.

You can display odds in Decimal, Fractional or American from the settings menu. A detail that only shows up in the rules: whatever format you choose on screen, all payouts are calculated in decimal odds.

The Rules That Decide Your Bet

NorthStar publishes a long, genuinely useful set of betting rules. Three clauses matter more than the rest.

Settlement is at regulation time. Unless a market says otherwise, bets settle on the result at the end of full time – 90 minutes including injury time in soccer, three 20-minute periods in hockey – and overtime does not count.

There is a published payout ceiling. NorthStar reserves the right to cap the net payout on any bet or parlay by one account holder at CAD 500,000 within a 24-hour period, and warns that the limit can be lower depending on sport, league and bet type. We would rather see a number in writing than the silence most operators offer.

You have 14 days to dispute a settlement. Complaints about how a bet was settled must reach the operator within two weeks; after that they are only considered with indisputable evidence. Disputes go to support@northstarbets.ca, and any decision by the AGCO or iGaming Ontario overrides the house rules.

NorthStar Bets Casino

The casino side runs on Playtech, which shapes what you get: a Playtech-heavy lobby with the studio’s own progressive jackpot network attached.

NorthStar Bets Ontario casino lobby showing the NorthStar Picks and Top New Games rows above the live casino tables
The casino lobby is built as curated shelves rather than one endless grid.

The Lobby and How It Is Organised

Rather than a single wall of thumbnails, the lobby is cut into named shelves, each with its own game count: Ontario Favourites, Live Casino, NorthStar Picks (12 games), Top New Games (24), Latest Releases (48), In the Spotlight, Jackpots, Vegas Vibes, Table Games and Jade Lounge.

The Jackpots shelf is the one that justifies the Playtech plumbing. These were the live grand jackpot totals when we looked:

Progressive network Grand jackpot
Jackpot Blitz $304,815.28
Age of the Gods $110,382.34
Joker Flip $47,288.46

Age of the Gods is Playtech’s own progressive network and only appears at Playtech-powered operators – it is not something a Pragmatic-led competitor can match.

Live Dealer and the Sports Arena

The live dealer section is deeper than the sportsbook-first branding suggests, and it is filtered by Live Blackjack, Live Roulette, Mega Fire Blaze, Live Baccarat, Live from Las Vegas and Game Shows.

NorthStar Bets live dealer lobby showing the Sports Arena tables and the branded NorthStar Elite Blackjack table
The Sports Arena shelf and NorthStar’s own branded blackjack table.

Two things here are specific to this operator. A Sports Arena shelf of eight sports-themed live tables – Sports Blackjack, Sports Baccarat, Football Roulette – and NorthStar Elite Blackjack, a branded high-limit table built for this site rather than shared across the network.

Table limits are printed on the tiles before you sit down, which we appreciate: $0.20 to $5,000 on Quantum Roulette, $0.50 to $10,000 on standard roulette, $1 to $10,000 on Sports Baccarat and $0.50 to $3,000 on Football Roulette. Player counts run live on each table too – 429 on one roulette wheel while we watched.

Software Providers

The lobby has a dedicated Our Providers row, which is more transparency than most Ontario casinos bother with. Visible without expanding it: Playtech, Pragmatic Play, IGT, Light & Wonder, Playtech Live, Inspired, Hacksaw Gaming and Greentube, with a “Show More” for the rest.

That is a stronger top eight than the Ontario average – IGT and Light & Wonder in particular bring the land-based Vegas catalogue that pure-online lobbies lack.

Payment Methods

This is the weakest part of the operation, and the weakness is specific rather than general.

Deposits and the $20 Floor

The footer advertises Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Interac, iDebit and PayPal. American Express is genuinely rare in this market, and PayPal rarer still.

Method Deposit Withdrawal Minimum
Interac $20
Visa $20
Mastercard $20
American Express Not listed $20
iDebit Not listed $20
PayPal $20
Instadebit Not listed $20

The minimum deposit is $20. That is double the $10 that most Ontario books ask, and it applies per transaction. There are no deposit or withdrawal fees from the operator’s side – stated plainly in the help centre, and we found nothing in the terms contradicting it.

Worth noting: the help centre’s own list of payment methods is out of date. It still names “eCheck”, “Instant Payments” and “Payouts” – which are not methods you will find in the cashier – while omitting the American Express and PayPal that the footer advertises. Trust the footer.

Withdrawals: Times, Methods and the Mastercard Trap

Rule What NorthStar publishes
Minimum $20
Maximum None set by the operator; over $10,000 may take longer
Approval Usually a few hours, up to 24 hours
Extra checks Can add up to 72 hours
Methods Interac e-Transfer, Visa, PayPal, Instadebit
Fees None

Three traps to know before you deposit.

Mastercard cannot be paid out. You can deposit with it, but Mastercard does not accept casino withdrawals, so funding your account that way leaves you with no route out until you deposit again with something else. NorthStar says this clearly in the help centre – but you have to go looking.

You must deposit with a method before you can withdraw to it. A method is only registered on your account once money has come in through it, so registering a new payout route means putting another $20 in.

The withdrawal minimum is also $20. Two accounts of the same size at other books will let you take out $10; here a $15 balance is stranded until you top it up or bet it.

What is missing is a firm payout window. “Usually a few hours”, “up to 24 hours” and “up to 72 hours” for safety checks is a range, not a commitment – TonyBet, for all its other flaws, publishes 48 hours. NorthStar’s own guidance is that Interac is the quickest in practice, based on customer feedback.

Verification and Location Checks

NorthStar accepts a driver’s licence, passport or ID card, uploaded through the site or app, and asks for all four corners visible and no digital editing.

The help centre says additional documents are typically not required once registration completes – but the terms reserve the right to ask “at any time thereafter”, and to close the account if you refuse. Plan for the terms, not the help page.

One clause deserves a mention because most reviews skip it: your registration information “may be stored on servers located outside the province of Ontario or Canada”. That is standard for international platforms, and it is disclosed, but it is disclosed in the small print rather than the privacy summary.

The NorthStar Bets App

Around 3.5 out of 5 across some 616 ratings is not a triumph, but in this market it is a comparative strength: the same measure puts TonyBet near 2.7 and LeoVegas lower still. The app has been in the store since August 2022, which is early for an Ontario-only product.

Two cautions. The iOS listing was last updated in May 2026 – a longer gap than we would like on a betting app. And there are two NorthStar apps in the Canadian App Store: the Ontario one above, and “NorthStar Bets Canada” published by Slapshot Media Inc., rated 3.3 from 46 ratings, which is not the Ontario product. Check the publisher before you install.

The odds format switcher lives at the bottom of the sportsbook screen in the app rather than in settings – a small thing that is easy to hunt for.

Customer Support

This is where NorthStar beats the field outright.

There is a toll-free phone number, and it is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year: +1 (855) 218-7827. Neither TonyBet nor LeoVegas publishes a working phone line for Ontario players, and LeoVegas promises one it does not actually provide. NorthStar prints it in the help centre and commits to the hours.

Email goes to support@northstarbets.ca. Live chat exists, but only once you are logged in – so it is an account-holder channel, not a way to ask questions before signing up.

The help centre itself is a proper Zendesk knowledge base of roughly 68 articles, actively maintained: most of the payments and verification articles we read had been revised within the last few weeks. That is unusual, and it is the reason so many of the numbers in this review are specific.

Responsible Gambling and BetGuard

NorthStar’s own tools are the standard Ontario set, correctly implemented:

  • Deposit limits and loss limits, daily, weekly and monthly.
  • Decreases apply immediately; increases only after a 24-hour cooling-off period.
  • Time-out – you cannot deposit or play, but you can still reach support.
  • Self-exclusion for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years – and it cannot be lifted early.
  • Two-factor authentication on login, password change and new devices, by SMS or email.

The bigger development is BetGuard, Ontario’s province-wide self-exclusion register, and NorthStar participates. Register once and every participating operator in the province is told to block you – no more excluding yourself site by site.

Read the mechanics before you use it, because they are financial as well as protective. On registering with BetGuard, at NorthStar specifically: all open sports wagers are void, and any remaining balance is automatically withdrawn to your last payment method. Reinstatement afterwards runs through BetGuard, not through the operator, and iGaming Ontario has the final word on any dispute about it.

Security and Reputation

  • Registered with the AGCO under OPIG1226485, with an iGaming Ontario operating agreement.
  • Location enforced by GeoComply; VPNs, proxies and remote desktop tools fail the check.
  • RG Check accreditation and IBIA B2C membership displayed in the footer.
  • Sportsbook supplied by Kambi, casino and account platform by Playtech – both established, audited suppliers.
  • Player funds held in a bank account “as trustee for the Player (not as banker or debtor)” – segregation stated in the terms.
  • Two-factor authentication available on the account.
  • A published payout ceiling and a published complaints route.
  • Dormant-account funds can ultimately be forfeited – see below.
  • The terms carry an unfilled “(Operator)” placeholder in the self-exclusion clause.
  • Registration data may be stored on servers outside Ontario or Canada.

The dormancy clause needs stating plainly, because it is the one term here that can cost you money while you do nothing.

An account goes inactive after 12 consecutive months without a player-initiated transaction – a deposit, a withdrawal or a bet. It becomes dormant after a further 24 months, so 36 months in total. At that point the account is suspended and deactivated, and NorthStar returns the balance to your last payment method.

If that return fails, the operator says it will use “reasonable efforts” to contact you. And then the sting: if it cannot reach you within 24 months of the account becoming dormant, the funds may be forfeited to NorthStar Gaming. Three years of silence plus two more of failed contact and the balance is gone. Keeping your contact details current is not a formality here.

To be fair on the other side: this is a segregated-funds operator with a named integrity association, a published payout cap and a real complaints route – and unlike some of its competitors, it carries no regulatory penalty from another jurisdiction.

Final Verdict

NorthStar Bets is the most complete all-round package we have reviewed in Ontario so far, and the reason is unglamorous: it does the boring things properly.

The Kambi board is genuinely deep – around 400 markets on an ordinary MLB game, roughly twice what we counted at TonyBet – and the betting rules explain themselves instead of hiding. The Playtech casino brings the Age of the Gods jackpot network and a branded live blackjack table nobody else has. And it is the only book in this set with a toll-free phone line answered around the clock.

What holds it back is the cashier. A $20 floor on both deposits and withdrawals, no firm payout window, Mastercard deposits that cannot be paid out, and a dormancy clause that can eventually forfeit your balance.

Category Score Why
Legal 5.0 AGCO registered, GeoComply enforced, four accreditation marks
Sports 4.5 Kambi board, ~400 markets a game, payout ceiling published
Casino 4.0 Playtech jackpots, eight named providers, branded live tables
Payments 3.0 No fees, but $20 both ways and no firm payout window
App 3.5 3.5/5 across 616 ratings – best of the group, but two apps
Support 4.5 Toll-free phone 24/7/365, email, chat, live knowledge base

Overall we place NorthStar Bets at 4 out of 5 for Ontario bettors.

Who it suits: bettors who want a deep board with published rules, anyone who wants to phone a human about their account, and casino players who want the Playtech jackpot network. Who it does not: small-stakes players who deposit and withdraw in $10 chunks, anyone who needs a guaranteed payout time, and Mastercard-only depositors.

Alternatives to NorthStar Bets

If the $20 floor on both ends of the cashier or the dormancy clause is a dealbreaker, two other AGCO-registered books are the closest comparison. TonyBet asks the same $20 to deposit but publishes a firm 48-hour payout window, though its board is roughly half as deep and it has no phone line at all. LeoVegas is the stronger casino of the three, backed by MGM Resorts and its own exclusive studio content, but it never publishes a deposit minimum, charges 5% on funds you withdraw without betting, and its app is the worst-rated of the group. If the $20 floor on both ends of the cashier is the dealbreaker, Betano and bet365 both run deeper cashiers with no minimum on the way out.
