How accurate are NHL playoff predictions in October?

Not very. In the last five seasons, 55 of the 80 teams in a playoff spot on 28 October made the playoffs, and in 2025-26 only 9 of 16 did. With 10 to 14 games played, one result can move a model by several points, and the two leading models differ by more than 30 points on teams such as Pittsburgh and the Islanders.
