Do I have to report sports betting winnings in Ontario?

Not if you bet for fun. The CRA treats a recreational bettor's winnings as windfalls, so they stay off your tax return whatever the amount. They become reportable only when betting is a business, judged on organization, special knowledge, intent and the number of bets, which the courts find rarely. Interest you later earn on the money is reportable.

Can I deduct gambling losses in Canada?

No, unless gambling is your business. Because recreational winnings are not taxed, losses cannot be deducted either: in Cohen v. The Queen (2011) a Toronto lawyer's $121,991 poker loss was refused because his poker was not a business. In the US, a resident of Canada can deduct US gambling losses against US gambling winnings on Form 1040-NR.

Are winnings from US sportsbooks taxed?

In the US, yes. The payer withholds 30% of a non-resident's gambling winnings, Canadians included, and reports them on Form 1042-S. Part can be recovered by filing Form 1040-NR and deducting US losses under the Canada-US tax treaty, up to 90% of them from the 2026 tax year. For a recreational bettor the win is not income in Canada.

Are PROLINE+ winnings taxable?

Not for a recreational player: PROLINE+ wins are gambling winnings like any other. The leading Canadian case is about PROLINE itself. In Leblanc v. The Queen (2006), the Tax Court held that two brothers' $5.5 million of net winnings from Pro-Line and other sports lotteries was not taxable, because their gambling was personal rather than a business.

Are lottery winnings taxable in Canada?

No. The CRA lists lottery winnings of any amount among the amounts you do not report, unless the prize is really income from employment, a business or property. Interest you earn by investing the prize is taxable, and so is part of a prize paid as an annuity, such as a "for life" prize.

Are casino winnings taxable in Canada?

Not for recreational players: a casino win is a windfall like any other gambling win. Professionals can be taxed. In 2025 the Federal Court of Appeal upheld tax on three poker players whose winnings were their livelihood, while the 2010 world poker champion Jonathan Duhamel was not taxed because his poker was not run commercially. Wins at US casinos face 30% US withholding, except at five table games.
