Ontario Sports Betting Statistics: Our Research on Odds, Licences, Fines and Apps

Ontario sports betting statistics from our own research: 34 licensed sportsbooks run by 29 companies, NHL margins from 2.86% to 7.33%, 14 AGCO sanctions since 2022 and 34 betting apps measured three times. Every figure is dated, sourced and free to cite with a link.
This page collects the studies behind those numbers. For each one you will find the main finding, when and how we measured it, a chart and a citation line you can copy. The full tables and the detailed method sit on each study’s own page, and every study names the dates it covers, so a figure quoted today stays accurate for its period.

| Cash wagers on sport and event betting | $12.7 billion | 12 months to Aug 2026 (iGO) |
| Share of those wagers kept by the books | 7.0% | 12 months to Aug 2026 (iGO) |

| Montreal + Edmonton to win the Grey Cup: books vs KPMG | 58% vs 87% | 27 Oct (books), 20 Oct (KPMG) |
Two numbers frame the rest. The same NHL bet costs about two and a half times as much at the dearest licensed book as at the cheapest, and the market as a whole kept 7.0 cents of every dollar bet on sport over the last year – against about 2.8 cents expected on a money line at the cheapest book.
The Ontario Sportsbook Margin Index
Main finding. On the same 15 NHL games, Pinnacle kept the least on the money line, 2.86%, and BetNova the most, 7.33%: on $5,000 of bets over a season, that is an expected cost of about $139 against $341.
Data and method. Money line, puck line and total read at the same moment at 15 Ontario books on 19, 21, 22, 23 and 26 October 2026 – 557 pairs of prices. The margin is the sum of both sides’ implied chances minus 100%, averaged per book; books are ranked if they were priced in at least four of the five readings, which leaves 14 of the 15: bet365, priced on only four of the games, is not ranked.
Also in the study. NorthStar Bets and BetRivers take the same Kambi feed, yet kept 3.09% and 4.23%. Futures cost far more than single games: 29.6% on the Stanley Cup winner and 70.9% on the Hart Trophy at NorthStar Bets on 21 October.

Ontario’s Sportsbook Register: 34 Licences, 29 Companies
Main finding. 34 websites are licensed to take sports bets in Ontario, but only 29 companies hold those licences: Canadix Limited alone runs three of them, Betinia, Swiper and ToonieBet.
Data and method. We read the whole iGaming Ontario operator directory – 49 operators and 84 gaming websites, accurate to 1 September 2026 – rather than a sample, counted every site listed for sport and event betting by hand and matched each to the company that holds the licence. Re-checked on 8 and 27 October 2026.
Also in the study. The count fell from 35 to 34 between 2 September and 8 October 2026, when one brand dropped the category and announced it was closing. Five sites are licensed for sport and event betting only: BetMGM Sportsbook, DraftKings Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook, Partysports and 888 Sport.

AGCO Fines and Sanctions Against Ontario Sportsbooks
Main finding. The AGCO has announced 14 sanctions against Ontario sportsbook operators since May 2022 – 13 fines totalling $1,291,000 and one two-day suspension – and the largest, $350,000 against FanDuel in January 2026, was for 144 bets on suspect table tennis matches it did not flag or report.
Data and method. Taken from the AGCO’s own lottery and gaming news releases, sportsbook cases only; penalties over casino games are left out. NorthStar Bets’ 2024 fine is counted at the reduced $20,000.
Sanctions by Type of Breach
Grouped by what the AGCO said went wrong, the integrity and advertising cases account for more than half of the money.
| What went wrong | Sanctions | Fines |
|---|---|---|
| Advertising and marketing (bonuses, boosted odds, cash to sign up) | 5 | $336,000 |
| Suspicious bets not reported (integrity) | 2 | $350,000 and a two-day suspension |
| Responsible gambling: a player in trouble missed | 2 | $255,000 |
| Cash-out offers accepted and not honoured | 1 | $200,000 |
| Anti-money laundering checks skipped | 1 | $100,000 |
| Bets offered on prohibited junior hockey | 2 | $30,000 |
| Slow answers to the regulator | 1 | $20,000 |
| Total | 14 | $1,291,000 and one suspension |
The first four fines, all in 2022, were for advertising bonuses or boosted odds. Since then most of the larger penalties have been for what a book failed to notice: a player losing heavily, a suspect match, a risky deposit pattern. PointsBet has been sanctioned three times; BetMGM, NorthStar Bets and theScore twice each.

Stanley Cup Odds vs the MoneyPuck Model
Main finding. Ontario sportsbooks gave the Dallas Stars a 4.6% chance of winning the 2027 Stanley Cup on 28 October 2026; the MoneyPuck simulation gave them 9.3% and HockeyStats 10%.
Data and method. The full 32-team futures market was read at 12 Ontario books on the morning of 28 October 2026 – seven distinct sets of prices, as some books share a feed. Each set was turned into chances with the book’s margin removed, the sets were averaged, and the result was set beside MoneyPuck’s 100,000 and HockeyStats’ 150,000 simulated seasons from the same morning.
Also in the study. Minnesota is the other big gap: 6.0% at the books, 9.8% at MoneyPuck. The margin on the Cup market itself ran from 19.9% at BetMGM to 33.0% at theScore Bet.

NHL Playoff Odds vs MoneyPuck and HockeyStats
Main finding. Ontario sportsbooks gave the Toronto Maple Leafs a 47% chance of making the 2027 playoffs on 28 October 2026, against 31% at MoneyPuck; the widest gap was San Jose, at 47% with the books and 18% at MoneyPuck.
Data and method. “To make the playoffs” prices for all 32 teams at ten Ontario books, converted to chances with the margin removed and averaged over six separate price sets, so books sharing a feed count once, against MoneyPuck and HockeyStats on the same day.
Also in the study. On 23 of the 32 teams the books were within ten points of the two models’ average. Of the 12 teams where they disagree most, the books were closer to 50% than the models in 7.

Grey Cup Odds vs the CFL’s KPMG Model
Main finding. The CFL’s KPMG Playoff Probability model gave Montreal and Edmonton a combined 87% chance of winning the 2026 Grey Cup in its 20 October release; Ontario sportsbooks, on 27 October, gave them 58%.
Data and method. Grey Cup winner prices at ten Ontario books read at the same moment on 27 October 2026 – six separate price sets – with the margin removed, against the KPMG release published by the CFL. That release came before the last week of the regular season, so part of the gap is timing.
Also in the study. The books rate BC (18.0% against 6.2%) and Toronto (12.2% against 2.4%) far higher than the model does. The futures margin ran from 16.1% to 21.6% across the books.

Ontario Betting Apps, Measured Three Times
Main finding. 10 of Ontario’s 34 sports betting apps will not install on an iPhone 8 or iPhone X, and the same brand can be rated 4.70 on the App Store and 2.4 on Google Play, as BetVictor was on 23 October 2026.
Data and method. The Canadian App Store and Google Play listing of every app tied to a brand on the iGaming Ontario register, plus OLG’s PROLINE+, read on 9 September, 9 October and 23 October 2026: rating, number of ratings, installs, size, minimum iOS, languages and date of the last update.
Also in the study. bet365’s iPhone app carries 182,601 ratings, more than the next three apps combined. Only 13 of the 34 apps support French, and download sizes run from 22 MB to 534 MB.

Ontario’s Betting Market in iGaming Ontario’s Figures
Main finding. In the 12 months to August 2026, $12.7 billion was bet on sport and events with Ontario’s private operators, and the books kept $894.1 million of it – 7.0%, by our calculation from iGaming Ontario’s monthly reports.
Data and method. Cash wagers and non-adjusted gross gaming revenue (stakes minus winnings) for the betting category in the iGaming Ontario market performance report, August 2026 edition, published on 23 September 2026. The share kept is revenue divided by wagers. iGO’s figures leave out OLG’s PROLINE+ and bonus bets, and betting includes esports, novelty and exchange bets.
| Period | Cash wagers on betting | Revenue kept by the books | Share kept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fiscal 2024-25 (April 2024 – March 2025) | $11.4 billion | $725.5 million | 6.4% |
| Fiscal 2025-26 (April 2025 – March 2026) | $12.1 billion | $823.9 million | 6.8% |
| 12 months to August 2026 | $12.7 billion | $894.1 million | 7.0% |
| August 2026 | $843 million | $54.4 million | 6.5% |
| Since launch (April 2022 – August 2026) | $45.1 billion | $2.95 billion | 6.5% |
The share kept has risen from 6.4% in fiscal 2024-25 to 6.8% in 2025-26 and 7.0% in the last 12 months. Betting is a small part of the market by stakes – 11.3% of all cash wagers in the 12 months to August 2026 – but 19.1% of revenue.
Why the Market Keeps More Than a Single-Game Margin
Why 7.0% and not the 3% to 7% of a single NHL game? The mix of bets. Parlays, player props and futures carry margins several times higher than a single game, as the futures table in the Margin Index shows, and a month’s results add their own luck. Our odds calculator shows the margin on any pair of prices.

How We Collect the Data
The studies differ in subject, but they follow the same rules:
- Primary sources only. A book’s own Ontario board, the iGaming Ontario register, the app stores’ Canadian listings, the regulator’s releases and the models’ own published figures. Nothing comes from another comparison site.
- Same moment, same games. Prices are read at every book within one short window, so no book is compared on stale numbers.
- Margin removed in proportion. To turn prices into chances we convert each side to an implied probability and scale the set to 100%.
- Shared feeds count once. Books that post identical prices from one platform, such as the Kambi and Altenar books, are averaged as one set.
- Dated editions. Every study states the dates it covers. When we refresh one, the new dates replace the old, and a figure quoted with its date stays correct for that period.
Where a figure is missing from a study, we leave it out rather than estimate it.
Turning Odds Into Chances: A Worked Example
Say a book offers Yes at +115 and No at -140 on a team making the playoffs. +115 implies 100 / 215 = 46.5%, and -140 implies 140 / 240 = 58.3%. Together they come to 104.8%, so the margin is 4.8%. Scaled back to 100%, Yes becomes 46.5 / 104.8 = 44.4%: that is the “no-margin” chance our studies report, averaged over the distinct price sets.
Terms Used in Our Studies
- Margin (overround): the implied chances of every outcome in a market, added up, minus 100%. It is the share of stakes a book expects to keep.
- No-margin chance: a price’s implied chance after the market is scaled to add up to 100%.
- Price set: one distinct set of prices. Books on a shared feed – NorthStar Bets and BetRivers on Kambi; ToonieBet, Betinia, Swiper and DAZN Bet on Altenar – often post identical prices and then count once.
- Share kept: revenue divided by wagers over a period, from iGaming Ontario’s figures. It reflects both margins and results.
- NAGGR: iGaming Ontario’s non-adjusted gross gaming revenue – cash wagers minus winnings, before operating costs.
- The register: iGaming Ontario’s public directory of operators. The AGCO registers each operator; iGO holds the operating agreement with it.
