Not applicable. This review covers the sportsbook. The 888 group runs its Ontario casino under the separate 888casino brand, which holds its own entry in the iGaming Ontario register under the same licensee.
VHL Ontario Limited runs 888sport from Gibraltar under an AGCO registration, and the lobby opens for a Canadian visitor. It has the deepest soccer, tennis and Formula 1 coverage in the province, the clearest banking pages in Ontario – and two near-identical apps in the Canadian App Store.
How We Checked 888sport
888sport is one of the few Ontario sportsbooks whose lobby opens and renders from a Canadian connection, so what follows is the live product rather than a set of help centre articles describing it. The odds, the market counts and the payment tables below were all read from the site itself.
Is 888sport Legal in Ontario?
Yes. 888sport is listed in the iGaming Ontario register under VHL Ontario Limited, which also holds the register entries for 888casino and 888poker. The sportsbook is authorised for Sports Betting and its declared site is 888sport.ca.
The footer states the position in one sentence: “VHL Ontario Limited, 601-701 Europort, Gibraltar, is licensed and regulated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission.” You must be 19 or older and physically in Ontario, and 888’s own help centre is blunt about the second half of that: “in order to register an account at 888.ca, login or play – you must be physically located in the province of Ontario.”
No AGCO registration number appears anywhere on the site. That is the norm rather than the exception here – the regulator does not publish numbers in its directory and most operators leave them off – but it is worth noting that it is not universal. Bally Bet prints its number, OPIG1242339, in the footer of every page.
The Gibraltar Detail
The licensee’s registered address is in Gibraltar, not in Canada, and that makes 888 unusual among the operators we have reviewed here.

This changes nothing about your legal position. An AGCO-registered operator is an AGCO-registered operator, the operating agreement with iGaming Ontario is the same, and your escalation path if a dispute goes wrong runs through the AGCO either way. It is simply worth knowing where the company you are contracting with actually sits, and 888’s is the one that sits furthest from the province.
A third entity appears once you reach the app stores. The Ontario iOS app is published by 888 UK Limited, not by VHL Ontario Limited – more on that below, because the app listings are the most confusing part of this brand.
888sport Sports Betting
The sportsbook is broad, European in its instincts, and noticeably strong on the sports most Ontario books treat as an afterthought.
888’s Canadian sitemap lists 342 pages, and the shape of it tells you where the book’s weight sits. Soccer accounts for 105 of them, more than motor racing, football and hockey combined. Formula 1 alone has a page for almost every Grand Prix on the calendar. There are also seven pages for GAA hurling and four for Gaelic football – Irish sports that no other Ontario book we have reviewed carries at all.
That European inheritance cuts both ways. The North American coverage is real, and the majors all carry futures and prop sections. But count the Canadian sitemap by sport and the priorities are unmistakable: 105 pages for soccer, 39 for motor racing, 13 for darts – and exactly one for the CFL, a 2025 futures market. There is no CEBL page at all, and both leagues are covered at BetRivers. If your betting year is built around the Grey Cup, this is not your book.
What the Live Page Actually Held
We counted the in-play board on a weekday morning in August 2026, outside the North American season:

Thirty-five live events at a quiet hour is a working in-play board, and the tennis depth – US Open first-round matches alongside lower-tier tour events – is the clearest sign of where 888’s liquidity comes from.
That dialogue is worth pausing on. Before you can do anything, 888 puts a Location Check in front of you – “Please confirm that you’re located in Ontario”, with a Confirm button and an I’m located outside of Ontario link underneath. Most Ontario books run their geolocation silently in the background. 888 makes you assert it, in writing, before the board is usable.
The sidebar carries the features 888 wants you to find: a BetFeed social feed and a Made For You personalised section, both sitting above the sports list.
Payment Methods
888 publishes more banking detail than most Ontario operators, including a full processing-time table and a worked example of how withdrawals are split. It also has a genuine restriction that catches people out: two of its six deposit methods cannot receive a withdrawal at all.

Deposits by every method clear in up to 10 minutes. Withdrawals are a different story, and the table above is 888’s own, not our estimate.
Three details in that table are unusually candid. All time frames are counted in business days, Monday to Friday, so a Friday-evening Visa withdrawal can realistically land the following Monday week. Withdrawals sit for one day in an “awaiting process” state during which you can still cancel them. And 888 names the company each payment is posted from: card and wallet withdrawals appear as Ontario Reg Ltd, Interac payments come from Gigadat, and wires may arrive from Ontario Reg Ltd, WorldPay AP Limited or Inpay. Card deposits show on your statement under the same Ontario Reg Ltd descriptor.
The Closed-Loop Rule
888 pays withdrawals back through the methods you deposited with, in proportion, and it publishes a worked example rather than describing the rule in the abstract. Read the policy closely, though: the “Member Transaction Balance” it describes is built only by Visa credit card and Interac e-Transfer deposits, not by every method in the table. Deposit $50 by Visa on Monday, $50 by Interac on Tuesday and $50 by Visa on Wednesday, and your “Member Transaction Balance” is $150 – $100 on Visa, $50 on Interac. Request $450 and the first $150 goes back along those rails in those amounts; only the remaining $300 goes to a method of your choosing.
The verification list is equally specific, and contains one restriction we have not seen stated so plainly elsewhere: Social Insurance Numbers and health cards are not accepted as identity documents. Passport, driver’s licence or equivalent photographic ID, a utility bill or card statement for address, and both sides of any card used to deposit.

The chat restriction is the catch. 888 says chat is available “anytime 24/7”, then explains that you reach it by logging in, opening the user icon and selecting Help Center – so the channel that runs around the clock is precisely the one you cannot use if the problem is that you cannot log in. For that case 888 points you at email, with no stated response time. The phone line closes at midnight ET.
The help centre itself is small. It holds 57 articles across all three 888 brands – casino, poker and sport combined. For scale, BetMGM publishes 1,529 Ontario help pages and DraftKings 445 Canadian articles. What 888 does publish is well written and current, but there is not much of it, and almost none of it is sportsbook-specific: there are no published cash out rules, no parlay ceilings and no bet limits anywhere in it.
The 888 Apps, and Which One to Download
This is the most confusing part of the brand, and it is worth getting right before you install anything.
The Canadian App Store carries two separate 888 sportsbook apps:

The Ontario one is the first. The name says Ontario, and that is the one tied to the provincial licence – even though its publisher, 888 UK Limited, is neither the AGCO licensee nor an Ontario company. The second app is the international product and is not the one to install here. Both were on version 6.2.0 in August 2026, which does nothing to help you tell them apart.
On Android there is only one, and the picture is simpler:

Both are among the lowest-rated Ontario betting apps we have measured – BetRivers sits at 4.8 on iOS and Bally Bet at 4.6. The iOS app needs iOS 15 or later and is 84 MB.
Responsible Gambling and BetGuard
888 puts its responsible gambling tools in the header rather than the footer, and it is one of the few Ontario operators to give BetGuard a permanent place in the top bar of every page.
BetGuard is Ontario’s centralised exclusion system: register once at BetGuard.ca and you are blocked from every operator holding an Ontario licence, for six months, one year, five years, or a custom term up to five years. 888’s article is clear about the part players most often misunderstand – BetGuard exclusions run independently of any exclusion you set with a single operator, and operators cannot lift them on your behalf. The account-level tools sit in a Control Centre reached from the shield icon in the header:

- Reductions apply immediately; increases carry a 24-hour cooling-off period.
- Where limits overlap, the most restrictive one always wins.
- Take a Break, with the account reopening automatically at the end of the period.
One tool here deserves singling out, because it addresses a real failure mode. 888 lets you turn off your own ability to reverse a pending withdrawal – the mechanism by which a player who has requested their money back changes their mind and gambles it instead. Switching that protection off is instant. Switching it back on takes seven days. That asymmetry is the right way round, and few operators offer the setting at all.
Geolocation
888’s geolocation is Wi-Fi-led, and its troubleshooting article is the most specific we have read from an Ontario operator – specific enough to tell you in advance whether it will work where you live.
The service does not support Chrome OS devices at all. It expects your Wi-Fi to be switched on even when you are connected some other way, and it needs to detect at least two other Wi-Fi networks to place you. 888 warns explicitly that being high up in a tall building degrades this. On cellular it falls back to a combination of Wi-Fi signal, GPS and carrier data.
It also blocks remote-desktop and VPN software by name – LogMeIn and GoToMyPC on the remote side, Witopia, OpenVPN and HMA on the VPN side. Running any of them means you will not get in. No geolocation vendor is named anywhere.
Security and Reputation
Final Verdict
888sport is a European sportsbook operating under an Ontario licence, and it has never really pretended otherwise.
What you get is genuine depth in soccer, tennis and motor racing that no other Ontario book matches, the most honest banking documentation in the province – times, business-day counts, payment descriptors and a worked example of how your withdrawal will be split – a phone line that a person answers, and responsible gambling tools that include one setting other operators should copy.
What you do not get is a book built for Canadian sport. One CFL page against 39 for motor racing and 13 for darts is not a sampling accident – it is what this book is. There is no CEBL, no published cash out rules, and a help centre of 57 articles covering three brands at once. The app situation is a mess that the operator should have fixed years ago.
